April 2021
Greetings LCDA Familia,
LCDA’s advocacy has reached new heights, with our research reporting 82 new Latino appointments to all public company boards in the first quarter of 2021--a quadruple increase compared with the same quarter last year. Latinas comprised 41% of these appointments and 40% of the directorships went to individuals serving on a board for the first time.
As highlighted in a recent Bloomberg exclusive, these numbers follow a push by states, companies, and pension funds that put a spotlight on racial, ethnic, and gender diversity on public company boards. Outside pressure on companies by coalitions such as Latino Voices for Boardroom Equity also aim to ensure fair representation of all races and ethnicities.
The current increase in Latino representation among board members offers a unique opportunity for boards to better reflect a range of diverse perspectives. Not discounting this significant progress, Latinos, who comprise 18% of the US population, continue to be the most underrepresented in the boardroom. In fact, if Latinos were to accrue the same number of board appointments every quarter for the next 10 years, Latinx directors would only hold 10% of public company board seats, far less than our percentage of the US population.
We look forward to continued progress in Latino board appointments and thank you for your continued allyship and support.
Stay safe and healthy, Esther Aguilera President and CEO
Kudos to LCDA Member, Cesar Conde, who took over NBCUniversal in May 2020 and has since hit the ground running! Highlighted in a recent Wall Street Journal exclusive, NBC’s News Chief Pushes Streaming and Bets on Post-Trump Story Lines. Last summer, Mr. Conde announced a “50% Challenge” to push for half of the division’s employees to be people of color, and half of them to be women. The network said the effort is bearing fruit, with people of color representing about 46% of its new hires since the challenge was announced and women representing about 67% of new hires. Conde brings much experience and a lens of diversity to the role. The son of immigrants from Peru and Cuba, the New York-born Mr. Conde is the first Latino to lead a general-interest English-language TV news organization. He has spent much of his career rising through the ranks of Spanish-language networks such as Univision and Telemundo. He is a corporate director at Walmart Inc. and PepsiCo Inc. >READ MORE
